NASUWT Scotland is supportive of the member's bill, led by Mark Griffin MSP, calling for the establishment of a Scottish Employment Injuries Advisory Council.
This would establish an independent, statutory council with permanent trade union representation, which would have powers to research workplace injuries and diseases and recommend to government the diseases and occupations the Scottish Employment Injury benefit should be paid to when it is devolved. This would be a vast improvement on the existing, outdated Industrial Injury Disablement Benefit.
Of particular interest to teachers are the opportunities to make this a fairer, more gender-balanced benefit and to seek the inclusion of Long Covid as a recognised industrial disease.
All members are encouraged to write to their MSP, seeking support for the Bill, using the template letter supplied, which can be adapted to reflect individual views.
